The Branches Series
(The Introduction)

VAULT II – The Branches Series is an ongoing collection of songs, stories, recordings, books, videos, and creative collaborations gathered from a lifetime in music. Each Branch serves as an introduction to a larger project, allowing listeners and readers to explore one story at a time while discovering the connections that tie them together.

Three branches are currently scheduled for release during 2026, with additional branches planned for the future.

The series begins with The World Is Better Dreaming, the first branch of the project and the first Dolby Atmos immersive single from VAULT II. Future branches will continue to expand the story, revealing new songs, experiences, and connections from across the Vault.

The World Is Better Dreaming
(Featuring Chris Taylor)

Scheduled for release on July 31, 2026, The World Is Better Dreaming introduces listeners to the first branch of the VAULT II journey. The date was chosen with great care, marking the anniversary of Barbara Silverman’s Celebration of Life and the year of what would have been her 100th birthday.

Featuring the remarkable vocal performance of Chris Taylor, the song will be released as a Dolby Atmos immersive single, allowing listeners to experience the music in a fully three-dimensional sound environment. More than a traditional stereo release, the Atmos presentation places the listener inside the performance, creating a deeper connection to both the music and the story behind it.

Inspired by Jeff Silverman’s mother, Barbara Silverman’s courageous battle with cancer, The World Is Better Dreaming was written during one of life’s most difficult chapters. Decades later, the song finally found its voice through Chris Taylor’s heartfelt interpretation.

It now stands as the first musical chapter of VAULT II – The Branches Series, where the songs and the stories behind them finally come home.

This stereo mix is not the standard stereo master. It is a custom binaural stereo presentation derived from the immersive mix, created specifically to provide a more immersive listening experience on both headphones and speakers while preserving much of the spatial character of the Atmos production.

The Lost Chords and Stories
(The Book)

More than a companion to the album, From The Vault II: The Lost Chords and Stories opens the door to the moments behind the music.

In these pages, Jeff Silverman traces the journeys that shaped the songs—uncovering the artists, studios, collaborations, and turning points that defined a lifetime in music. Some stories begin in well-known places; others emerge from quiet, unexpected corners of the creative process, where ideas were formed, set aside, and ultimately rediscovered.

Drawing from decades of experience as a producer, songwriter, and recording engineer, Jeff offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how songs evolve—how they are written, recorded, revisited, and sometimes brought back to life years later.

Together with the companion album, this book forms a unified project—connecting sound and story, and revealing not only the music itself, but the path it took to finally be heard.

From The Vault II (Songs From The Lost Chords)
(The Album)

Building on the legacy of From The Vault (A Collection of Works by Rick Springfield & Jeff Silverman), this new release marks the next chapter in Jeff Silverman’s creative journey—one that brings even deeper discoveries to light.

Returning to his archives, Jeff uncovered a collection of songs that had remained unheard—until now. These recordings, long tucked away in his personal vault, are presented here for the first time, offering listeners a rare opportunity to experience previously unreleased material spanning years of songwriting, collaboration, and musical exploration.

Paired with the companion book, From The Vault II: The Lost Chords and Stories, the album completes the picture—bringing the stories to life through sound. Together, they form a single, cohesive work: a revealing look at the evolution of an artist and the rediscovery of music that was never meant to stay hidden.

Released through Palette Music Productions, From The Vault II is more than a collection—it is a long-awaited unveiling.

How Many Times Must We Say Goodbye

feat. Marcie Free

Verse 1
Knockin’ at a door that always lets you in
Every time I close my heart you open it again
After all is said and done
Nobody lost, nobody won
Must we break before we bend

Chorus
How many times must we say goodbye
How many tears do we have to cry
Chasin’ the wind while our love slips by
Watchin’ our dreams drift out of sight
What does it take to turn the tide
How many times must we say goodbye

Verse 2
Reaching out to hold you, your words push me away
It’s hard to let you go, but it’s harder if you stay
If we remember and regret
Forgiving what we can’t forget
Can we reach past yesterday

Chorus

Verse 3
Laying here beside you, heart to restless heart
It’s easy to believe a promise in the dark
If we can face the morning light
And make it last beyond the night
We might catch a rising star

Bridge
Wonderin’ why love loses touch
I thought I knew you well
Was it too little or too much
Believe me – only time will tell
But we say goodbye

Chorus (Repeat Out)

Empty Surrender

feat. Stan Bush

Verse 1
You tell me it’s a battle that we’re fighting
Well, can’t make love, girl, if you want war
You’re gonna have to carry on one-sided
I won’t take the shots no more
So, the fighting is done
Are you happy you’ve won

Chorus
Nothing but an empty surrender
Filled up with long nights at home
’Cause being free from forever
Means you’re gonna end up alone
With nothing but an empty surrender
Nothing but an empty surrender

Verse 2
I thought that we could face the world together
No — ’cause for you love is giving in
I can’t win you over under pressure
So — let the battle end
Now, I’m saying goodbye
And you’re holding your prize

Chorus

Bridge
If victory ain’t all that you thought
If you’re finding that it’s bittersweet
Remembering all the times
When I stood there by your side
Then maybe you’ll come back
Baby, you might come back to me
Chorus (Repeat Out)

Reflection
Lara has always had a way of saying a lot with just the right few words, and “Empty Surrender” is a perfect example of that. The lyric is direct, honest, and hits exactly where it needs to.

Stan’s vocal on this track brings it all to life in a way that made it one of my favorites on the album — there’s a strength and vulnerability in his performance that never left me.

When I Call You Back

feat. Stan Bush

Verse 1
We were young back then and full of pride
Fearless spirits in the sky
Running like the wild run free
As the sun beat down and the heat was dry
Never thought twice, never asked why
We just followed our heartbeat
Now time rolls past and my eyes can’t see the memory
I’m tryin’ to hold on
But the sun comes up and always reminds me
That they are not gone

Chorus
That’s when I call you back
And turn away from reason and jump the track, reenact
Oh, let the sorrow call you back
And all the other seasons will fade to black, counteract
When I call you back

Verse 2
Sweat of the palms of a nervous boy
Talkin’ to his first love with agony and joy
Stumblin’ words of bliss
And the young girl smiles and shy’s away
She knows that there is still one day
She’ll be givin’ him his first kiss
Nothin’ like the innocence and honesty of youth
Throwin’ rocks up to the moon
I’ll always keep alive those feelings
And that night with you

Chorus / Solo

Baby, that’s when I call you back…

Reflection
This was a time when I was writing and producing across all kinds of styles, and learning to let the “Jeff Silverman artist voice” step aside so the right voice could step in.

That shift changed everything — it became about casting the right voice for the right song.

Stan was one of those voices. What he brought to this song, and so many others, took them to another level in a way I could never have done myself.

Heartbeat

feat. Nick Gilder

Verse 1
Somewhere out on that lonely street,
You might take a walk
And listen for the rhythm sound
Where the distant voices talk
And the concrete stains with true confessions,
Should I paint you blue?
Or turn it around to a rhythm sound,
I’ll take what I give you

Chorus
Stop the rain from fallin’,
Start the heartbeat callin’
(This heartbeat)
Can you feel the sound of my pounding heartbeat, heartbeat
The sound I’ve come to know,
You I’ve come to show
Heartbeat
(Heartbeat, heartbeat)

Verse 2
The offering on a fair exchange,
Where the frozen look for heat
We’re pounding out the rhythm
To a different drummer’s beat
Who’s standing in the rain,
The passion or the pain?
We’re right on time, I hear your sound
Can I take what I give you

Chorus
Bridge / Tag
Woo wooh
Woo wooh
Stop the rain from fallin’,
Start the heartbeat callin’

Final Chorus
Stop the rain from fallin’,
Start the heartbeat callin’
(This heartbeat)
Can you feel the sound of my pounding heartbeat, heartbeat
Can you feel the sound of this pounding heartbeat, heartbeat

Chasing Shadows

feat. Kristina Nichols

Oh yeah

Verse 1
Half alive and I’m on my own,
Just trying to survive
I’m locked outside, thrown away the key
Feel myself sink, walls fallin’ on me
’Cause I can’t take the heat,
Gotta get back on my feet
Sift through my pockets for that broken dream

Chorus
Out on the street,
My heart pounds to the beat
Chasing shadows on the wall
I need you back,
’Cause my world turned to black
Chasing shadows
Chasing your shadow on the wall
Whoo ooh
Chasing shadows

Verse 2
Jump to the sound of the rain coming down,
But no shelter in my site
The cold has burned a hole deep in my heart,
But when the light goes down, I look for you in the dark
Now this heartache brings constant pain,
’Cause since you’ve been gone,
I can’t find my way

Bridge
Where did you run, where did you hide?
You left me here to hold the memories inside
If I don’t find it soon, I’ll run out of time
’Cause I can’t keep goin’ on this way,
Don’t leave me out here one more day
Whoo ooh

Tell Me You Love Me

feat. James Christian

Ooohhh

Verse 1
Sayin’, sayin’, sayin’ love is forever,
I couldn’t leave, I need you more
I’m givin’, givin’, givin’ my confession
Whatever was said now is done,
I’m ready, just say I’m the one
Down on my knees and I’m beggin’ you, please, baby

Chorus
Oh no
Tell me you love me,
I won’t hurt you anymore
Ooh whoa whoa
Show me you need me,
’Cause baby, I’ve been there before

Verse 2
I’m prayin’, prayin’, prayin’ you will remember
The way I held you when you cried
You needed, needed my protection
I still feel your lips on my skin,
Now I’m askin’, is that a sin?
Down on my knees and I’m beggin’ you, please, baby

Bridge
My heart was a desert
A long, long time ago
I was lookin’ for shelter
So how could you leave me
Now I found my way home,
Found my way home

Solo

Made me look for the truth in your eyes,
’Cause I’m feelin’ the pain deep inside
Down on my knees and I’m beggin’ you, please, baby

Story
I met James through Judithe Randall, who was an amazing friend, co-writer, and music matchmaker. Judithe was an incredibly talented and gifted lyricist and artist who was always helping talented people she believed in.

Judithe had contacted James, who was in Connecticut at the time, and asked if he would come to California to record some of her songs. From that point on, it was only natural that James and I would end up working together as well.
We actually wrote a song together called “Tell Me You Love Me” that has never been released.

Circle of Tears

feat. James Christian

Verse 1
The doors are open and the right words spoken
Like the calm before the storm
Our bodies yearning and the sweet fire burning
Can it last beyond the dawn

Here together, this side of never
Tears of joy and tears of pain
If we should fall, we’ll climb the wall
And the circle starts again, we’ll live this

Chorus
Circle of tears, with the trust and fear
That every heartbreak only makes us stronger
So live the circle of tears, through the restless years
And we’ll belong, in this circle of tears

Verse 2
Skies turn grayer, while we laugh now cry later
On the winds of change that blow
Hold you or hurt you but I, won’t desert you
I’ll say goodbye but I won’t go
†he magic passes, from flame to ashes
We grow together and grow apart
Illusions shatter but they, don’t matter
In the mirror of the heart, we’ll live this

Chorus

Bridge
Tears too late to forget
Too soon to regret
We’ll keep holding on
Let’s give time a chance
And finish the dance
When the song is gone

Outro
In this circle of tears

I Wasn’t Lonely Until I Met You

feat. Jeff Silverman

Verse 1
We were the victims of our own youth,
Untamed passions always on the loose
’Cause all the future never got in our way,
Love was the game and we wanted to play
You turned this all to a mystery,
Now nothin’s like it used to be
You’ve got my world turned upside down,
Can’t get my feet back on the ground

Chorus
I wasn’t lonely ’til I met you,
Thank you for changin’ my point of view
I wasn’t lonely ’til I met you,
I’m in a mess now, baby, what can I do
I wasn’t lonely ’til I met you,
I wasn’t lonely ’til I met you

Verse 2
Independent, you think you’re so cool,
I’ve got to warn you, I ain’t nobody’s fool
My heart beats like a man on fire,
’Cause you ran away stealin’ my desire

Chorus / Solo

Bridge
As I lie here,
All I can do is think of you (think of you)
Made it so clear
That I’ve got to wake up (wake up)
’Cause you’re never comin’ back now

Chorus

Reflection
Aaron Jecoves, who was A&R at A&M at the time, reached out and asked me to write and produce a song for a band they had just signed called Logic. I invited Nick Trevisick to join me on the writing, and I recorded a reference vocal to give them a clear sense of the song.
Unfortunately, the deal never moved forward, but I did have the opportunity to work with the band, and they brought a real energy to the track. Aaron loved it — and for a moment, it felt like it had a real shot — but like so many things in this business, it quickly slipped away.

At a certain point, I felt the urge to take it further and added more parts on my own, just to bring that phase of the song to completion. The muse can be a tough taskmaster at times… but I’ve seldom ever regretted listening to it.

I always had a soft spot for my original reference vocal, along with a touch of additional voices that helped shape the feel of the production. It stayed with me.

It was never truly lost though… and it gives me great pleasure to finally see it find its place on From The Vault II.

This House Is Not a Home

feat. Tom Croucier

Verse 1
You don’t see me,
Not me no more (ooh woh)
The silence follows me right
Out of every room
Always talkin’ to myself

Verse 2
The years had come,
And years had gone
The feeling ran away and
Left me here alone
Sittin’, lookin’ out my window,
Lovers on the boulevard,
Hand in hand and walkin’ real slow

Chorus
This house is not a home
Ever since you’ve gone away (oh)
You will never know these tears I cried (oh woh, oh baby)
I’m in here all alone,
Don’t know if it’s night or day
’Cause baby, this house is not a home

Verse 3
I’m on the phone,
Searchin’ for you (ooh woh)
What would I say if you should
Answer when I call
Should I tell you words that only,
Words that only lovers hear?
Or should I say I’m lost and lonely

Chorus

Bridge
How strange, but I thought that we had everything (oh)
We changed too soon before discovering
True love wins

Verse 4
When I hear the music playing,
Every song reminds me of you,
And I hear the words they’re saying

City Limits

feat. Tom Croucier

Verse 1
Too many hearts on fire in the heat of the city night,
Don’t want to look outside and see the tears of the constant fight
So many times she said, “I gotta get away,”
She has to take the chance to see
Or it’ll be a mystery, ’cause

Chorus
Outside the city limits,
Two hearts are born for living,
Where they beat as one (whoa oh)
Outside the city limits,
Freedom is just beginning,
It’s time to leave behind
These city lights

Verse 2
All of her friends are saying that she’s lost in a hopeless dream,
And all of the words they tell her aren’t the words that they really mean
They’ll never take the chance to see,
’Cause it’s such a mystery

Chorus

Bridge
Face to face,
She’s a prisoner without a cage
Face to face,
She won’t live with this silent rage no more

Dancing with the Devil I Know

feat. Meredith Marshall

Verse 1
In the stillness, there’s a howling,
But I won’t let it take me down again
I’ve been there before
I can feel it, breathing hungry,
Down my neck as it waits for me to crawl,
But I won’t go
I won’t go, I’ve been there before,
Don’t you know? Hey

Chorus
Sun and moon,
Rising on my reverie,
Leaving me soon
To my own devices
I know I’ll be spending the rest of my life
Dancing with the devil I know

Verse2
I’m a witness to surrender
Of a mind, of a spirit, of a soul (yeah)
I’ve been there before
I curse the candle, I praise the darkness,
I raise my eyes to the vision of my fall,
But I won’t go (yeah)
I won’t go (yeah),
I’ve been there before (yeah),
And I know

Chorus

Bridge
Somewhere there is music playin’ for me,
Somewhere there’s somebody sayin’,
“Come away and dance into the light”
Chorus x2
Dancing, dancing with the devil (dancing with the devil I know)
Dancing, dancing with the devil
Dancing, dancing with the devil
Dancing with the devil
Dancing with the devil
Dancing with the devil I know

Prelude
Sometimes a song doesn’t take years to write… sometimes it arrives in a single day.

I met Meredith as a stranger, and somehow, in the span of that one day, we wrote and recorded “Dancing With The Devil I Know.” By the time we left the room, it already felt like it had always been there.

We walked away. The song didn’t. It stayed with us… alive in a way that’s hard to explain. Not unfinished — just waiting. Like so many songs in the vault, it wasn’t lost. It simply hadn’t met its moment yet.
Some songs chase the light. Others are born in the shadows. This one chose both. And now… it steps forward. Still breathing. Still dangerous. Still dancing with the devil we know.

Angel in Rags

feat. Kristina Nichols

Verse 1
Hard working guy sitting in the street
Head down to the ground
Starin’ at his blackened shoes on his feet
With a stern and concerned brow
The voice of justice is in his head
Askin’ what it’s all about
The world outside is shoutin’, make a stand
Or choose to be silent, and not be a man
When big city’s running through him
Like a bullet through his heart
But his soul will take the pain away

Chorus
He’s an angel, angel in rags (an angel in rags)
A poor boy tryin’ to stay ahead of the game
In the cold and silent rain
He’s an angel, angel in rags (an angel in rags)
And he’ll close his eyes at the end of the day and pray

Verse 2
People starin’ and it feels so strange
A rebel without a gun
Livin’ day to day in life’s chains
A victim of the prodigal son
He’s no hero of our modern times
But he sees a truth in all he meets
A gentle man with the will to survive
Just tryin’ to live his dream
Where can you find the honesty
When the innocence has faded away
But he cares enough to carry on

Chorus

Bridge
No time for comfort
No place to hide
Out here alone in the world
left to live or die

Chorus x2

The World Is Better Dreaming

feat. Chris Taylor

Dedicated to my Mum, Barbara L. Silverman
Dec. 28, 1926 – July 31, 2011
Her place of peace was, and will always be, in her dreams.

Verse 1
Haunted by a whisper
Heavy with the news
Iron gates are closing down
Everything to lose

Verse 2
The cell confides solutions
Secret answers interwound
You’re a soldier in a war zone
A million miles from home
Try not to talk about it
This running out of time

Chorus
The world is better dreaming
Smiling when you’re sleeping
When you’re cold and bleeding
The world, the world is
Better dreaming (Amen)
Better dreaming (Amen)

Verse 3
You will find no shelter
In a valley forged of tears
And when all that you have to turn to
Has been lost, you disappear
It’s hard to talk about it,
You’re running out of time
Chorus

Verse 4
It’s too much to talk about it
When you’re running out of time

Chorus

Song Reflection
My Mum, Barbara, was living a nightmare… except when she was asleep. Her only escape was in her dreams.

When she was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer and given one year to live, everything changed overnight. I felt an urgency to capture what I was feeling in real time, watching her face, something no one should ever have to face, while still trying to find peace within it.

This song came from that place. A place I couldn’t share with her then, but one I needed to find my way to some sense of peace.

Tower of Tears

feat. Kenny Cetera

Verse 1
I tried to get in but you pushed me away
Why are you so afraid of me?
Shut out the world without letting me in
I need to find a way to make you see
Before it’s too late, reach out for my hand
Trust me to show you the way
Or the cold of the night in this lost foreign land
Will carry you so far, far away

Chorus
Into a tower of tears
Will you live out the years
With no one to comfort the heart of your lonely soul
Because in a tower of tears
You will be left with the fear
No one around to hold
While you keep on growin’ old, in a tower of tears

Verse 2
Well, we all feel the pain and we all lose our way
But only the strong will survive
You won’t be alone if you just won’t give in
I’ll be there to comfort in time
And if you doubt and lose sight of my hand
And fall into the black of day
Now I may not find that distant land
That carried you so far, far away

Chorus

Bridge
A wish is a wish
Until it comes true
A dream may not be fantasy
The sky is the limit
The world is for you
To make it all reality
Oooh, with me
Or the cold of the night in this lost foreign land
Will carry you so far, far away

Chorus Out

A Voice I Believed In
Kenny’s voice was something I believed in from our very first session back in ’89. Over the years, we kept coming back to this song, knowing it had something to say. When Vault II came into focus, the timing finally felt right.

Some songs, and some voices… just refuse to be lost.

Somewhere: The Duet

feat Rick Springfield & Aeone

Verse 1
Tonight, as I watch your love unfold
The child inside my soul
Breaths you in and holds you closer
Tonight, I wish we weren’t so far apart
Because the beating of this heart
Is telling you, you can’t surrender

Verse 1B
The words are on my lips but they’re hard for me to say
If you can keep believing
One single kiss could take my breath away

Chorus
Somewhere in the silent morning
Someway out beyond the sea of blue
There’s a dream that’s calling
Somewhere there’s a place for me and you
Oh, me and you
Oh

Verse 2
So near, as the images unwind
We move in perfect time
And precious words of love are spoken
And here, across the miles so far away
Yeah, I cross my heart and pray
That a promise made will not be broken

Verse 2B
The words are in my head
But they’re hard for me to say
Sometimes alone, the power of what I feel
Can take my breath away

Chorus 2

Bridge
And if love grows strong there
Let your heart be strong there
And may this spirit reign over you

Chorus 3 (Repeat Out / Modulations)

Round III of “Somewhere”
For this first-ever duet version of “Somewhere,” Aeone contributed newly recorded background vocals, adding an ethereal thread to this third chapter of the song — from her original recording, to Rick’s interpretation, to this shared reimagining.
