Reflection
Lara has always had a way of saying a lot with just the right few words, and “Empty Surrender” is a perfect example of that. The lyric is direct, honest, and hits exactly where it needs to.

Stan’s vocal on this track brings it all to life in a way that made it one of my favorites on the album — there’s a strength and vulnerability in his performance that never left me.

Reflection
This was a time when I was writing and producing across all kinds of styles, and learning to let the “Jeff Silverman artist voice” step aside so the right voice could step in.

That shift changed everything — it became about casting the right voice for the right song.

Stan was one of those voices. What he brought to this song, and so many others, took them to another level in a way I could never have done myself.

Story
I met James through Judithe Randall, who was an amazing friend, co-writer, and music matchmaker. Judithe was an incredibly talented and gifted lyricist and artist who was always helping talented people she believed in.

Judithe had contacted James, who was in Connecticut at the time, and asked if he would come to California to record some of her songs. From that point on, it was only natural that James and I would end up working together as well.
We actually wrote a song together called “Tell Me You Love Me” that has never been released.

Reflection
Aaron Jecoves, who was A&R at A&M at the time, reached out and asked me to write and produce a song for a band they had just signed called Logic. I invited Nick Trevisick to join me on the writing, and I recorded a reference vocal to give them a clear sense of the song.
Unfortunately, the deal never moved forward, but I did have the opportunity to work with the band, and they brought a real energy to the track. Aaron loved it — and for a moment, it felt like it had a real shot — but like so many things in this business, it quickly slipped away.

At a certain point, I felt the urge to take it further and added more parts on my own, just to bring that phase of the song to completion. The muse can be a tough taskmaster at times… but I’ve seldom ever regretted listening to it.

I always had a soft spot for my original reference vocal, along with a touch of additional voices that helped shape the feel of the production. It stayed with me.

It was never truly lost though… and it gives me great pleasure to finally see it find its place on From The Vault II.

Sometimes a song doesn’t take years to write… sometimes it arrives in a single day.

I met Meredith as a stranger, and somehow, in the span of that one day, we wrote and recorded “Dancing With The Devil I Know.” By the time we left the room, it already felt like it had always been there.

Song Reflection
My Mum, Barbara, was living a nightmare… except when she was asleep. Her only escape was in her dreams.

When she was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer and given one year to live, everything changed overnight. I felt an urgency to capture what I was feeling in real time, watching her face, something no one should ever have to face, while still trying to find peace within it.

This song came from that place. A place I couldn’t share with her then, but one I needed to find my way to some sense of peace.
