INNOCENCE OF LOVE

INNOCENCE OF LOVE is one of my never-released artist songs, originally written and recorded in the early 80’s, now remastered and recently placed in the movie AVERAGE JOE (The Unwavering True Story), courtesy of GPS Songs. Within the first 10 minutes of the movie, this song plays a pivotal role, accompanying a tender scene portraying “love at first sight” between Joe (Eric Close) and Denise (Amy Acker) as children. The heartfelt track captures the innocence and excitement of their early bond, laying the foundation for a lifelong relationship tested by Joe’s unwavering stand for his beliefs. While the film centers around Joe’s fight for religious expression, it delivers a broader message that supports the rights of all religions, not just Christianity, making Average Joe a powerful exploration of faith, love, and the freedoms we all cherish.

I wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music for this track with the renowned Mitchell Froom, whom I first met in the late ’70s at Sound City Studios. At the time, Mitchell was playing keyboards on David LaFlamme’s solo albums, while I was working on my own solo project with Bill Drescher. Over the years, Mitchell went on to produce the first three Crowded House albums and has worked with a stellar lineup of artists, including The Bangles, Los Lobos, The Corrs, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Paul McCartney.

This track is part of my upcoming collection, From The Vault II (A Collection of Works by Jeff Silverman), featuring more unreleased music from the same era. The first collection, From The Vault (A Collection of Works by Rick Springfield and Jeff Silverman), was released during 2010-2015 on Frontiers Records.

LYRICS

Verse 1:

Where is the child inside this wall (inside these walls)
Where are the tears that never seem to fall
It’s easy to be hard without love at all (without you here at all)
Until you came back to me
Until you just made me see

Chorus:

We have the Innocence of love
We hold the Innocence of love
The simple words from the heart
The honesty that love starts
Lets not let the innocence ever part
From our love

Verse 2:

So lets get back to the basics tonight (tonight, tonight)
I feel it’s time for the time to be right, to show you
These moments together are as precious as life
We’re two hearts in a burnin’ glow
We’re two hearts young enough to know

Chorus:

We have the Innocence of love
We hold the Innocence of love
The simple words from the heart
The honesty that love starts
Lets not let the innocence ever part

Bridge:

It’s back to living with simplicity
Back to touchin’ each other so tenderly
That’s the way things should be

Chorus:

We have the Innocence of love
We hold the Innocence of love
The simple words from the heart
The honesty that love starts
Lets not let the innocence ever part

We have the Innocence of love
We hold the Innocence of love
We are the Innocence of love
We give the Innocence of love
We live the Innocence of love
